Book Review

‘Elijah, Stressed & Anointed’

by Jeff Lucas

Reviewer: Sue Wilding

This book is part of a series called Character and Charisma, which also includes studies on Joshua, Moses, Samson and Elisha. Lucas combines narrative, teaching, personal testimony and wit in an eminently readable style.  He is also a speaker with an international ministry who works alongside the Pioneer Team and the Evangelical Alliance.  He regularly writes a lively, thought-provoking column in the magazine ‘Christianity’.

His narrative of the life of Elijah takes us from the foundations of prophecy, in prayer, through the trials of faith he endured as his ministry developed. Lucas devotes a long chapter to Carmel, where God answered dramatically by fire, the incident for which Elijah is principally remembered. However, Lucas is careful to deduce some valuable spiritual lessons from Elijah’s post-Carmel experiences.  His account of God’s meeting with Elijah on Mount Sinai is intensely moving.  God’s renewed instructions to him there and Elijah’s response to them cause Lucas to question whether we need to learn from what he failed to do.  Controversially Lucas asks if the charismatic movement went far enough.  Should it have gone on to challenge the power structures of the established church in another Reformation?

Although, after Sinai, Elijah withdraws more from public ministry, he goes on to leave a superb legacy by training Elisha and other prophets.  In contrast to his beginnings as a lone voice to the nation, he appears to have founded the schools of the prophets.  They, in their turn, continued to be a voice to the nation.

The last chapter of the book is concerned with Elijah’s ascension and appearance on the Mount of Transfiguration with Jesus.  It is entitled, ‘Curtain and Encore’ and describes the glorious future of one of the most dynamic characters in the bible.  The whole study of this man’s life is an inspiration and encouragement to anyone who desires to live by faith in God and the power of the Spirit, despite a hostile surrounding world.  I recommend it heartily.
