Heal Our Land

Book Review

“Finding God in the Land of Narnia”

by Kurt Bruner & Jim Ware

Reviewer: John Cavanagh

Having been with friends to see “The Lion, The Witch & the Wardrobe” just before Christmas, I was delighted to receive a present of this book on Christmas day. C S Lewis said about the Narnia Chronicles, “When you have read how Aslan was killed by the White Witch and came to life again, I think you will probably see that there is a deeper meaning behind it. The whole Narnian story is about Christ”. Bruner & Ware’s book is an excellent look at how the fantasy stories in the Chronicles teach the basic tenets of Christianity. The authors examine these truths about creation, sin, redemption, the nature of man, the crucifixion and resurrection, the spiritual life and the second coming and others. A nice touch is the simple fact that it covers all of the Chronicles. You get at least a tidbit from each and every book in the series and what it says about Jesus. Starting with “The Magicians Nephew” and ending with “The Last Battle”, it has a flow which readers of the Chronicles will appreciate. I read this book having read the Chronicles a number of times. It wouldn’t be very meaningful to read it before reading the Chronicles, although I found that it contained some insights into the stories themselves that made me think, “Oh! That’s what it was about”. There are quotes by Lewis from other books which should encourage readers to get into all the great books this master of theology produced.

Bruner & Ware have also written “Finding God in the Lord of the Rings”
