Book Review
‘Captivating’
by John and Stasi Eldredge
Reviewer: Sue Wilding
This is a book is about women, whom Stasi calls the ‘crown of creation’, and her crucial and creative role in the kingdom of God. A woman does not have to be married to fulfil this role. She just has to discover her feminine heart.
Through some searingly honest details about her own personal history, stories about her friends and by digging back into the bible for foundational truth, Stasi and John weave together a beautiful book that takes us back to God to answer the core questions of our hearts.
Despite the disappointing answers from imperfect parents and the lies of Satan, God, through His word, gives a resounding ‘Yes!’ to our fundamental questions about ourselves. To women in particular, He reveals Himself as the archetypal hero, a lover who wants to rescue us, heal the wounds of life and lead us in a romantic dance. There are frequent references to books, plays and films in our popular culture where these ideals are often the core themes.
It is a ‘beautiful’ book because reading it is to experience a further unveiling of the glory or beauty of the kind of relationship God wants to have with us. What prevents it from becoming over sentimental is the belief that being a Christian is not only about a love relationship. We fulfil our role most gloriously when we rise to wage warfare against the evil in the world. In our own unique ways we are called to wage spiritual warfare.
In conclusion I heartily recommend this book, as it was recommended to me. By its blend of bible teaching, biographical detail and allusions to today’s art forms, it is a book which touches the heart. It will cause you to think, remember and perhaps cry – in a word – captivating, just as we are to God!
