Heal Our Land

Book Review

“Simply Christian”
by Tom Wright

Reviewer John Cavanagh

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this excellent book. It was written to commend Christianity to those outside the faith and to explain it to those inside. For me, speaking as one of the latter, it certainly achieved this in a refreshingly candid and jargon-free way. The style is very reminiscent of C S Lewis, with the same depth of thought expressed in a very readable way.

The book has three sections. The first considers the dream of a world put to rights, and covers the longing for justice, beauty, meaningful relationships and spirituality in a wonderfully clear way. He tackles the question, "Why are things like this?" head on and tantalisingly leaves the answer to “Can they be changed?” to later in the book.

In section two he lays out the Christian story's claim to be the true story about God and the world. He offers it as both explaining why we hear the "echoes of God's voice" and as the answer to how our longings can be met.

In the last section he looks at what it means to be a Christian and how you become one.

What I found brilliant about this book is that he dealt with multiple topics of concern (such as human sexuality) in a fully biblical way while saying it with a gentle graciousness and a depth of vision of the wonderful fullness of the Gospel message. It is hard to put into words the joy I felt in reading this. Well worth reading a second time.
