WHEN HEAVEN INVADES EARTH

A Practical Guide to a Life of Miracles

Bill Johnson

Reviewer Brian Cowen

This book first published in 2003 was recommended to me by a friend and it has challenged and inspired me and renewed a hunger to not settle for anything less than God’s planned purpose for my life.

Bill Johnson is a fifth generation Pastor  living in California who writes from a practical experience of seeing God move in miraculous ways transforming peoples lives through ordinary committed Christians in his church. The book isn’t just a catalogue of testimonies of conversions, transformed lives and miracles but is written to encourage the Church to both understand our birthright as adopted children of God and our responsibility to minister His love and grace to a hurting world. A lot of books leave you feeling this responsibility is for the super spiritual, gifted and ultra confident but my response was “yes, this is my calling and destiny; I just want to see more of God transforming lives in my community”.

The book opens with an account of the marriage of a couple in his church whose guests were made up of the homeless and poor from the neighbourhood. Their gift list was made up of hats, scarves, gloves and sleeping bags so that each guest would receive not just a free meal but a practical gift. The event ended with the healing of significant life threatening illnesses of a man who not only came to the Lord in the following weeks but also returned to full time employment after 17 years of disability.

The overall challenge is to powerless Christianity, and each chapter challenges both our understanding of the calling and spiritual provision for our lives and our response to ‘doing the works the Father calls us to do’.  Bill writes with an easy style and in each chapter subject he lays a biblical foundation followed by many scriptural and practical illustrations to demonstrate how the truth applies to our lives.
